Smoking and Heart Disease

Facts About Smoking and Heart Disease

What is the connection between smoking and heart disease?
There is a strong link between smoking and heart disease, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
Furthermore, a study done by doctors in Britain found that people who smoke tobacco have a greater risk of developing heart disease than people who do not smoke tobacco.

Association Between Smoking and Heart Disease

Furthermore, the connection between smoking and heart disease is supported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The CDC says that smoking is a major cause of cardiovascular diseases. Smoking can cause the blood to become sticky. Consequently, the blood is more likely to clot, increasing the likelihood that the smoker can get a heart attack.
In addition, sticky blood increases the chance that the heart of the smoker will receive a poor supply of blood, thereby increasing the chances that the smoker can develop heart disease.

Cigar Smoking and Coronary Heart Disease

A study on smoking and heart disease conducted in the United States showed that smoking cigar can increase a young man’s risk of dying at a young age from coronary heart disease, if he continues to smoke and does not quit. However, there is no increased risk of dying at a young age from cigar smoking  when a young man quits the habit.

Cigarette Smoking and Coronary Heart Disease Risk

Smoking a cigarette can increase your risk of developing heart disease. When you smoke a cigarette, there is a greater likelihood that your blood pressure will go up. Furthermore, there is a greater chance that your blood will clot. Moreover, the amount of oxygen that your heart receives reduces. All these effects of smoking a cigarette increases your risk of developing  heart disease.

Passive Smoking and Heart Disease

Did you know you can get heart disease , even if you do not smoke, just by inhaling the smoke from the cigarette or cigar smoker? That is right! Inhaling smoke can increase your risk of getting heart disease by about 30%. Each year, thousands of people die this way!

Maternal Smoking and Congenital Heart Disease

A congenital heart disease is a heart disease that a baby is born with and which causes the baby’s heart to malfunction. A congenital heart disease can cause disability in a baby and even death.
A study has shown that when a woman smokes during pregnancy, it can cause heart defects in her baby. Pregnant women who smoke more than 25 cigarettes a day are more likely to give birth to babies with serious heart defects than women who do not smoke when they are pregnant.

Another study conducted in the Washington area suggests that when a pregnant woman smokes in the first three months of her pregnancy it increases the risk that the baby will be born with one type of congenital heart disease or another.

Benefits of Quitting Smoking and Heart Disease

When a smoker quits smoking, it reduces the risk that he will develop heart disease as well as other diseases. Furthermore, it increases the chances that he will have better health and, therefore, live a more fulfilling life.

Smoking and ,Consequently, Heart Disease Prevention

If you are a non-smoker, what can you do to avoid starting the habit?
  • Be careful of the people you associate with for the Bible says “bad company ruins good morals”. People who smoke can influence you to start the habit. Therefore, spend a lot of your time with people who do not smoke. They will exert a positive influence on your behavior and help you to continue avoid smoking.
  • Avoid places where people smoke. Choose to go to places where smoking is not allowed.
  • Do not watch television commercials that advertise and try to glorify smoking. Turn off the television or switch to another channel when such adverts come on your screen.
  • Research shows that reading can help you to reduce your stress. So, read your Bible every day. Let the words of that wonderful book inspire you and fill you with positive thoughts.
  • When your friends tempt you to try smoking, break up with them. Look for friends who will encourage you to continue living a clean life.
  • Remind yourself of the benefits of not smoking every day. Read about it or watch video about it. It will help you to keep focused so that you do not make the mistake of starting the harmful habit.
  • Remind yourself of the harmful effects of smoking every day. It will help to warn you of the dangers of the habit as well as remind you that you will also suffer the fate of those who smoke, if you start the habit. To do this, watch the videos or listen to the audio files of people who have developed diseases as a result of smoking.
  • If you live with someone who smokes, have a discussion and tell him that the habit bothers you. Politely ask him not to smoke when you are around, or advise him to smoke in his room. Furthermore, sell the benefits of quitting smoking to him and encourage him to quit smoking.
  • Pray to God every day to help you never to start smoking. God will help you with Supernatural Power to prevent you from starting the habit. You may pray a prayer such as, “Dear God, I thank you that you have taken care of me all these years and helped me to be a non-smoker. Father, I want to continue in this way. I want to continue keeping my body as a temple for You. Please help me to overcome all the temptations to smoke that may come my way. Give me your grace and strengthen me so that I can resist every temptation that will come my way. Help me to remember what smoking has done to others, when I am tempted, so that I will not weaken my resolve and give in. Please help the people like me around the world who are non-smokers to continue living without smoking. And please help smokers around the world who want to quit smoking so that they can find the strength and will to quit smoking. Help me to stand so that I can give you the glory. Amen.”
